Those of us who have been in the diet trenches have experienced a sense of nutrition whiplash. One minute a food is praised, the next it’s villainized: Eggs are bad; no, eggs are good…wheat is good; no, wheat is bad… We’re experiencing that whiplash again with sugar substitutes. At first, we turned to these alternatives to keep calories down. But a Cleveland Clinic team just uncovered that the sweetener erythritol is linked to a higher risk of stroke and heart attack. Plus, sucralose (Splenda) has been shown to trigger gut changes that fuel weight gain. In another study, sucralose and acesulfame K were linked to disruptions in blood-sugar regulation after just two weeks of use!
“Artificial sweeteners put into products to supposedly make them ‘healthier’ pave the way for diabetes,” asserts Fred Pescatore, MD, who admits he drank soda with “antinutrient” fake sugars when he was 80 pounds heavier as a teen.
Now, there’s a new kid on the sweetener block, and it’s proven to enhance health and weight loss. This all-natural hero is allulose. It’s classified as a “rare sugar” since it’s found in small amounts in dried figs, raisins and maple syrup.
What makes allulose so special? The FDA declared that allulose “is different from other sugars in that it is not metabolized by the human body in the same way as table sugar.” And weight-loss expert David Perlmutter, MD, adds, “Allulose is the only natural sugar in America that has received this designation.” Indeed, allulose’s real power lies in how it functions in the body to improve several metabolic factors:
